Thank you to everyone who came out to SNATR #4, grand finale of the 2010 season! For this special event, we rewarded the drivers with a fun to drive, three hour route. To get the three hour event in before sunset, that meant keeping the pace a tad brisk. But my goal was to keep the navigators looking up most of the time, enjoying the late summer beauty of the St. Jacobs, Conestogo, and Elmira areas, not with their heads buried doing calculations. The weather was beautiful all day, with a lack of cloud presenting some additional sun glare challenges in leg B. All part of rallying!

First thanks go to our checkpoint teams and volunteers:

Andrew and Kolette at A1, B1 in the Blue Subaru Legacy wagon
Trevor at A2, B2 (the airport and cornfield car!) in the Blue Subaru STi, who also designed this route
Frank and Rebecca at A3, B3 (tarmac bridge CP) in the White Audi
Jeff and Dennis (CP co-ordinator, route note contributor) at A4, B4 in the Whitish Volvo
Ivano at A5, B5 (the sneaky “parked car” on the Fife return) in the Black Subaru Legacy sedan
Roger and Lynda at A6, B6 (industrial park) in the Red Mini
And especially Martin for working registration, CP A7 and doing all of the thankless final timing work!

Some great fun to watch in both classes, with the expert class added last minute. A pre-rally route correction to the Expert straight line diagram caused some confusion, with the Moores recovering the fastest. Opal and Paul running unequipped suffered the worst without the precise odometer check. In the end, a disputed time at B4 (thought I was going to have to appoint stewards for a moment) brought the Leonards in ahead of the Moores for the expert win. This is just more of the great battle going on in the ORRC Expert series so I think we’ll see this one continued at President’s Prize rally on October 23rd!

But SNATR’s exist for the folks who are new to the sport. We had two teams running their first rally, one team at their second rally, two competitive teams in their first year of rally slugging it out, and a couple of teams falling in the middle! Only one team missed a checkpoint; the last road one, B6, so perhaps the setting sun phased one of the most experienced rallyists in KWRC!

The Buchanan family was out in the elegant looking Hyundai/Mercury sedan for their first rally and came in with a very respectable score of 24.3. Marek and Singleton teams came in with scores of 18.3 and 18.4! A very tight battle for fourth where the difference after three hours of rallying was less than 6 seconds! The Zebra MDX team of Chris and Stover picked up their second set of hardware in two rallies finishing third novice!

SNATR’s not only introduce people to the sport of rallying, they are great practice for teams to practice timing. And our two lead novice teams were doing that! After working as a winning team at Infinite Monkeys, Gospodinov and Power were now battling it out with their normal partners. And quite the battle it was! With Gospondinov and Weigel leading until the rest break where penmanship cost them a minute penalty! Though Cummins and Power returned the favour at the end of Leg B, they had smaller average penalties on the road, and that gave them the final win, with both teams getting excellent scores!

We hope that you had fun, and If you’ve now got the rally bug, keep an eye on this calendar for other rally events: RallySport Ontario
